Why Sales Matters: Beyond the Commission Check

You can love your work. You can love sales. You can enjoy crushing it, earning big commissions, or just learning and growing your craft. But that will only take you so far. Emotion only takes you so far.

The biggest misconception about sales is that it is just about the money. While commissions are a huge part of it, that is only a surface-level why. The real power of a sales career is in the impact. It is about freedom, leadership, and serving others.

When a salesperson genuinely helps you find the right product, they are providing a service. They are helping you move from indecision to a confident choice. It is an honorable act. That is why I love sales. When done well, it is a service to others.

The ripple effect is even greater in B2B sales. When you sell, your SE earns more, channel partners earn more, and you help organizations cut costs, increase revenue, and improve experiences. Even locally, as your income grows, you create micro-economies by supporting small businesses. Sales is a noble profession when done with integrity and a focus on serving the customer.

The Danger Without a Why: The Road to Burnout

It is not an easy job. You can prep for demos and master tactics, but without a clear why, you will not last in this career.

Hard quarters come. Markets change. If your only fuel is short-term emotion or a shiny reward, discipline fades. Burnout creeps in when you push too hard for too long without a purpose bigger than what is right in front of you.

Every time I edged toward burnout, I obsessed over the immediate and forgot the ultimate. The moment I reconnect with purpose, the same workload feels different. The weight is still there, but I am able to carry it better.

It reminds me of when I ran the Leadville 100. After 75 miles of running across the Rockies with a marathon still ahead, you want to quit. If your WHY is not deep enough, you will. For me, it was about not letting my family down. My wife had sacrificed so much for me to be there. Every time I felt like quitting, I remembered why I was doing it. My family was my why. It was the anchor that kept me going.

Examples of Powerful Whys

A powerful why goes deeper than the next commission check. Some examples:

  • Getting out of debt to feel financial freedom
  • Retiring early
  • Providing a better life for your children than you had
  • Taking care of a sick parent and covering their medical costs
  • Giving generously to causes you believe in
  • Creating time freedom to design your days and be present
  • Building something meaningful with amazing people

When I ask top sellers why money matters to them, they share stories like these. It is never just about the money. It is about what the money provides.

I have also found that people who connect their why to a worldview or faith system have a stronger foundation. It becomes the basis for wanting to serve others, give generously, and leave an impact.

How To Find Your Why

You need an anchor bigger than yourself. A fancy car can be a great goal, but it is not a why. Your why is the deeper purpose that keeps you going when goals alone are not enough.

Start with reflection. Take time to answer these questions and write down the answers:

Foundation
What kind of impact do you want your life to have?

Beyond You
Who are you doing this for? What future do you want for your family, partner, or community?

Your Future State
What does a well-lived week (and life) look like for you? More time freedom, more learning, more travel,

more music, more health? Define the picture.

Money’s Mission
If you earned 30% more this year, exactly what would you use that money for? List the first five things.

Sales As A Vehicle
Write one paragraph: “Sales helps me accomplish this because…” Tie the craft to the cause.

Make It Visible
Put your why and goals where you read them daily. Review them before work each day.

My Why (Open and Grounded)

For me, purpose starts with leaving people, places, and things better than I found them. I want my family to feel supported and loved. I want to be generous. I want my customers and partners to feel seen and served. Sales gives me a daily way to live that out and the means to fund it.

I see my career as a way to live out my faith and values by working wholeheartedly, serving others, and creating more good than I consume.

When your why is clear, people feel it. As Simon Sinek said, “Charisma has nothing to do with energy; it comes from a clarity of WHY. It comes from absolute conviction in an ideal bigger than oneself.” You do not have to be loud. You just have to be aligned.

Closing Thoughts and Next Steps

Sales is a great career when your why is solid. It will carry you through the long quarters and make the wins more meaningful.

Next up, I will show you how to set and hit massive goals that turn your why into reality.
